Be Aware of Home Eye Safety This September

In honor of Home and Sports Eye Safety Month, we've chosen to focus on ways to keep your house safe for your eyes specifically in purchasing eye safe toys. Don't wait until it's too late to guarantee your house is an eye-safe zone.

Generally, babies enter the world with an underdeveloped visual structure that develops with them. In the beginning, newborns can see an object at close range only. A youngster's optical system is continuously stimulated as he matures. Toys can be one of the easiest methods for stimulating a child's eyes. However, at the same time, it's important to consider that most childhood accidents occur at home, many with toys.

What's the best way to prevent accidents? There are several steps you can take when selecting toys and games for the home to ensure your child's eyes are not in danger.

First of all, check that toys with long handles – such as sticks- aren't sharp-edged, and closely oversee youngsters under two with such toys. Although building blocks are generally fine for kids of all ages, it's best to check that the edges are rounded, in order to avoid eye or other bodily injury. It's suggested that you avoid shooting toys, such as arrows or guns. In an instance where this is not possible, then use of these toys should only be used when accompanied by a responsible adult. When allowing older children to play with chemicals or tools, make sure to give him or her safety glasses.

Toys are far from the only danger in the household. Corners with a sharp edge that are found on tables are a frequent cause of injury for shorter children and should be protected. Chemicals that are accessible are another source of danger for children and should be kept out of reach or locked up to prevent curious children from obtaining them.

While it's true that toys may not always be totally harmless, there are lots of great playthings that can benefit a child's eyesight. There are a number of toys tailored to particular ages that offer amazing ways to advance optical development. When selecting toys for youngsters, go for those that focus on hand-eye coordination and will encourage children to understand spatial relationships. You may want to consider trying to look on the Internet before stopping at the toy store. This way you can do your best to make sure your purchase will protect your children and will enrich their visual development at the same time!
